Sustainable and Safe Design

Engineering context

Engineering practice that respects human environment in design, construction and operation of projects, results in long-term social, economic and environmental benefits that are essential for sustainable growth.

A safe design approach begins in the conceptual and planning phases, taking into account the materials used and methods of manufacture or construction. A designer needs to consider how safety can best be achieved in each of the life cycle phases.

This one-day workshop details 'Sustainable and Safe Design' (S2D), a unique process that ensures human interaction with the built environment does not harm the natural environment, including the people that occupy it.

The workshop guides participants through the basics of a sustainable and safe design, hazard identification, risk assessment and controls, as well as the tools required to work towards 'S2D'.
