The Professional Year in Engineering

Professional Year in EngineeringThe Professional Year in Engineering is the only Australian government-legislated work-readiness program developed to enhance the employability of recent engineering graduates. Combining online resources with class room based workshops; the Professional Year program also includes a 12 week work placement within an Australian organisation’s engineering team. Upon completion, participants are able to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, understand Australian workplace conditions, operate effectively in a working team and apply effective project management techniques.

Program Outcomes

By the end of 32-weeks of in class study, PY students are able to confidently achieve the following:

  • Compose a successful and professional resume suitable for an Australian workplace
  • Prepare electronic presentations and produce extensive business documents such as reports, letters, emails and other forms of professional correspondence
  • Apply the communication skills learnt in order to develop effective work place relationships
  • Understand what is required to land the job in the current Australian market
  • Operate in a range of business environments and interact with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Implement Occupational Health and Safety procedures to meet national legislative requirements

 

Program Outline

1. Orientation

You will be provided through an overview of the program which assists migrant engineers to prepare for the Australian workplace. You will also be advised as to what is required and expected of you throughout the 44-weeks. The orientation will also provide you with the opportunity to have your queries answered.

 

2. In class

Delivered in a blend of online learning and class room based activity learning model, the Professional Year has scheduled face-to-face classes over a 32-week period to facilitate better networking and communication with peers and also teachers. The classes are part time and are either one full day a week or 2 nights a week. Professional Year students will also study to receive a Certificate IV in Project Management Practice which will form part of the Professional Year program.

 

3. Work Placement

Professional Year students are given the opportunity to work as an intern for 12 weeks with a host company. Working full time gives PY students invaluable experience as an engineer. They will also have access to a mentor throughout the work placement.

 

Eligibility

The Professional Year is open to holders of various visa types, including Skilled-Recognised Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 476) and Skilled-Graduate (Temporary) visa (subclass 485), however other visa-holder types, as well as residents and citizens, are also able to undertake the program (though the program is not CRICOS, and is full fee-paying. HECS and fee-help do not apply).

 

Contacting a migration agent or the Department of Immigration and Border Protection regarding your eligibility before applying is strongly advised.

 

Application Process

All applications must be approved by Engineering Education Australia on behalf of Engineers Australia, the peak body for the engineering profession in Australia. Applications must be accompanied by certified copies of all required supporting documents.

Professional Year class intakes occur regularly in most states and fill very quickly. In most instances you will be undertaking your class work with other eligible PYear professions such as ICT and accounting. Additional intake dates will be added below as they are released.
