Mechanical Engineering Practice for Building Services Engineering - Module 2

The Mechanical Engineering Practice Course for Building Services Engineering is a special series of three x two-day courses/modules that covers the planning, design, testing and commissioning and the management issues facing building services engineers in their day-to-day work.

 

The course material is up to date and uses Australian Standards, the Building Code of Australia, State and Local Government Regulation.

 

The mathematics and mechanical theory necessary to undertake this course are refreshed within the course. Roles and responsibilities are discussed in each module, so that participants understand the different roles of project teams, and the expectations of the client/occupant/architect/engineer.

 

Case studies, practical exercises, group discussion, calculation and interpretation of materials taught will reinforce learning objectives.

 

Recognised for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by Engineers Australia (EA) in accordance with EA CPD Guidelines.

Target Audience

The Mechanical Engineering Practice Course provides an overview of Mechanical Services in commercial buildings, principally for architects, engineers, building and property professionals who want to increase skills and update knowledge. Module 2 is specifically for those who are involved with energy efficiency in commercial buildings.

Course Outline

Day 1 - Conceptual background – Use and Abuse of Energy in Buildings

 

Overview of Greenstar and Nabers (ABGR) energy rating tools (note; this is not Greenstar or Nabers training – refer GBCA and
Nabers for training courses)

  • Detailed background and philosophy to the mandatory BCA (2008/2009) section J Energy Efficiency requirements
  • State and local government legislation requiring BCA compliance, deemed to satisfy and alternative solution pathways to meeting the performance requirements of BCA Section J
  • BCA deemed to satisfy overview of BCA sections J1 to J8
  • Alternative solutions – verification methods JV2 (BCA 2007) and JV3 with specification JV and the use and limitations of energy modeling

 

Day 2 – Application of Energy Efficiency to Typical Office Buildings

  • Detailed review of BCA J5 air conditioning and ventilation
  • Overview of BCA J6 – lighting
  • Overview of the BCA J1 and J2 building fabric and external glazing with (ABCB) windows calculator
  • Worked examples of typical office building for deemed to satisfy (DTS) J1 to J8
  • Detailed discussion and feedback (Questions and Answers)

The author and facilitator, Alan Obrart, has over 35 years experience in the design, installation and maintenance of mechanical  and building services. Alan focuses on the engineering practice aspects of mechanical and building services to present material that is relevant to designers, managers and consulting engineers. Principal of Obrart & Co, Alan has spent the last decade as a
consultant in building services engineering. Prior to this, Alan spent 25 years as owner and principal of the successful design and construct mechanical contracting (January Engineering) and process refrigeration chiller manufacturing (Summit) businesses, both sold in 2000.



Alan has extensive experience as an mechanical and building services engineer and is an expert facilitator backed by professional engineering qualifications including:

  • Engineers Australia C.P. Eng NPER (National Professional Engineering Register) Mechanical and Building Services.
  • AC (Accredited Certifier) NSW BPB, with graduate diploma (2001 UTS) in Building Surveying and Assessment for BCA Fire Safety Solutions.
  • University of Sydney, Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning, senior lecturer, course co-ordinator graduate program in Building Services.
